What is “New Teams?” Microsoft Launches Huge AI-Powered Update

New Teams by Microsoft

This month Microsoft launched a major overhaul of the Microsoft Teams app for both Windows and Mac to improve performance and usability.

This latest iteration of Microsoft Teams, which Microsoft is currently calling “New Teams,” plans to deliver a faster, more streamlined, and more adaptable experience for users. During its public preview phase, New Teams demonstrated impressive performance improvements, boasting speeds up to twice as fast and using a significantly reduced 50% less memory compared to Classic Teams.

New Teams Features

New Teams serves as the foundation for the next generation of AI experiences, such as Microsoft Copilot. This AI integration offers support for managing tasks, summarizing conversations, and improving meeting productivity.

Users will experience better security and accessibility tools with a simplified interface, enhanced personalization options, and improved accessibility for keyboard shortcuts and screen readers.

Microsoft has achieved full feature parity, encompassing a range of features such as custom line-of-business apps, third-party apps, breakout rooms, 7×7 video, call queues, PSTN calling, contextual search, and more.

The new app includes support for multi-tenant organizations (MTO) and multi-tenant, multi-account (MTMA), enabling seamless cross-tenant communication and collaboration across organizational boundaries. The introduction of multi-tenant organizations allows for more seamless collaboration among multiple tenants—crucial for organizations managing mergers, acquisitions, or global subsidiaries.

How to Upgrade to New Teams

The migration process does not require complex data transfers. Classic Teams users will be automatically upgraded in the coming months, and those interested are able to access the app already. All it takes is one click on the switch at the top left of the desktop app. Chat messages, teams, channels, and apps automatically appear in the New Teams app.
